10th February 2006 Press release - For immediate release
ONE OF LONDON'S NEWEST EMERGING EROTIC ARTISTS TO EXHIBIT IN LONDON. SANDRA TURNBULL TO SHOWCASE
HER LATEST WORK IN 'CAPTURED', A COLLECTION OF NEW WORKS TO BE SHOWN EXCLUSIVELY AT LONDON'S
WOBURN GALLERY IN JUNE 2006
From June 12th - 18th 2006 artist Sandra Turnbull will be presenting her 3rd solo show at the Woburn Gallery in
London WC1. Working in oils, water colours and sometimes painting on glass, the London based artist trained with
Caroline List and at the Central St Martin's School of Art has already established herself as one of the most
progressive and inventive erotic artists of the past five years, featuring in Michelle Olley's critically acclaimed 'Ars
Erotica, The Best of Modern Erotic Art' alongside Tracey Emin, Gary Hume, and Pablo Picasso.
An artist with little formal training, Turnbull began exhibiting 5 years ago, while forging a successful 20 year career
in the music industry managing a succession of artists, including The Eurythmics, Shakespear's Sister and London
Beat. Her interest in the human form and fluidity of the body and its movements was firmly established as she
studied yoga, Pilates, and Martial Arts, which led her to set up one of London's first and now foremost Pilates
schools in Nottinghill. However, painting remained her first love.
'Captured' is her latest exhibition, which explores her fascination and continual search to find new ways to present
the nude form, peering at sexuality and questioning beauty and its distortion through the female eye. Using humour
and frenetic brush strokes, coupled with bold colours and shapes, Turnbull seeks to symbolise excitement and action
in the world of erotic art, looking to marry acceptability and provocation. Her study of the human body and work as
a choreographer has encouraged her to explore human sensuality through her paintings. Part of her inspiration was
honed through visiting and getting to know female performers in the world of erotica, observing lap dancers and the
reaction of the performers and their clients. She is fuelled by a passion to tell a positive story in her work and there
is a joyful feeling about them that beams through the vivid colours and lively compositions.
"In 'Captured' I have continued my endless exploration of what we think and feel and what we actually choose to say
and expose to others. I believe that creating art is an uncontrollable desire to express explosive emotions and that
painting can alter our mood and open a dialogue with the unconscious mind. For me creating, viewing and
appreciating art is about letting go, abandoning restraint and just being in the moment."
'Captured - An Exhibition by Sandra Turnbull' will be presented at the Woburn Gallery, 14, Woburn Walk, London
WC1 from June 12 - 18th showing her work across several mediums and formats.
Private view on Monday June 12th 6.30 - 9.30pm.
